Division Book's Welcome Letter
Hello Division 7!
Wow! We have another tremendous sailing season in the upper Midwest this year. With events from Green Lake, MN to Clinton Lake, KS, your Division 7 is the largest geographical region of the Hobie Class Association. The venues within our division have some of the best attributes a Hobie Sailor could dream of. From the spectacular on-site camping at Lewis & Clark Reservoir, to the fun packed weekends at Storm Lake, Division 7 regattas are Don’t Miss Events!
In addition to our Fleet Hosted regattas, the Hobie Class Association has really stepped up our Regional and North American venues in 2012. San Francisco, CA hosts the Hobie 16 & 20 North Americans. With the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and Fisherman’s Warf; Hobie Racing is just a sliver of the activities to keep competitors busy. The North Americans have several months of separation…which may just allow you to compete at both! The Hobie 17 & 18 North Americans are at Lake Mohave, NV. The HCA couldn’t have picked two more distinctly different venues; Lake Mohave offers very warm temperatures, a population of 1 city block of S.F., and a pretty good chance to see something alien. Naturally, wisdom prevailed within the class to host the ‘Old Guys’ in a desolated desert where they couldn’t terrorize the locals! However, Las Vegas is just a 2 hour drive…so who knows how much sailing the 17’s will do!
HCA’s Regional events include the Midwinter’s East in Daytona Beach, FL; the Midwinter’s West in Lake Mahave, NV; and the SW Area Championships’ San Diego Classic, in California. All of these great events can be found on our newly designed HCA website at www.hacana.hobieclass.com.
One of the best features of our class is how well we balance fun and competition. While everyone loves to get away and enjoy friends, the outdoors, and the unique venues; competition is what draws us to the Hobie Class. These regattas, from Fleet Events, to Regional Area Championships, to the prestigious North American’s, all earn competitor’s points. These points are tallied by the class association based on a unique formula. It is very difficult to make the top 10 in any class. In 2011, Division 7 had 5 skippers in the top 10; Jim Sohn #6 (H16), Paul Bommersbach #8 (H17), Andy Larson #9 (H17), Jake Larson #7 (H20), & Dan Birkholz #2 (Hwave). Congratulations to these skilled competitors…but head this warning; it’s always nice to beat a champion, so I’m sure we will all be looking for our chance to upset the top contenders!
With such a great 2012 schedule, I guess it's time to start shedding those extra holiday pounds and begin the sit ups so you can trap out while keeping your boat flat!
